Installing the profile: internet required
When you scan the QR code, your phone has to reach the provider's remote provisioning server to fetch the profile. Without a connection, the install fails with an error such as "Unable to add mobile plan" or "Could not complete cellular plan change".
WiFi is the usual way, but any working connection does the job:
- Your existing mobile data, before you leave home.
- A hotspot shared from a travelling companion's phone.
- Free airport, hotel or café WiFi on arrival.
Activating on arrival: no internet needed
Once the profile is on the phone, connecting abroad is a normal mobile network registration — the same handshake a plastic SIM performs. Turn the line on, enable data roaming for it, and it attaches to a local partner network with no WiFi involved.
The safest routine
- Buy and install the eSIM at home, a day or two before departure.
- Leave the line turned off, or keep your home line as the data line until you land.
- On arrival, switch mobile data to the travel line and enable roaming for it. Check the plan's terms first: some plans start counting from install, others from first connection.
- Save the QR code and the activation details in your email as a backup.
If you have already landed with no connection
- Airport WiFi is usually enough for the two-minute download.
- Ask a companion to share a hotspot for the install.
- Airline or airport lounge WiFi and hotel lobby WiFi work equally well — the profile only needs a short burst of connectivity.
