Install eSIM on iPhone

Installing takes a couple of minutes and needs a WiFi or mobile data connection. Do it before you fly, while you still have a working internet connection at home.

Before you start

  • Your iPhone must be carrier-unlocked and running a recent version of iOS.
  • Have the provider's QR code open on a second screen, or saved to your Photos.
  • Stay connected to WiFi during the download.

Install with a QR code

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Mobile Service (called Cellular or Mobile Data on older iOS versions).
  3. Tap Add eSIM or Add Mobile Plan.
  4. Choose Use QR Code and point the camera at the code. If the code is saved on the phone itself, tap the photo-library option and select it.
  5. Confirm when iOS asks you to add the mobile plan, and wait for the download.
  6. Give the line a label such as "Travel" so you can tell it apart from your home number.

Install manually

If the camera cannot read the code, choose Enter Details Manually on the Add eSIM screen and type the SM-DP+ Address and Activation Code the provider gave you next to the QR image. A confirmation code is only needed if your provider supplied one.

Set the line up for travel

  1. In Settings → Mobile Service, tap Mobile Data and select the travel eSIM.
  2. Turn Data Roaming ON for the travel eSIM — travel plans roam on local partner networks and will not connect without it.
  3. Turn data roaming off on your home line to avoid your own operator's charges.
  4. Leave Allow Mobile Data Switching off so the phone cannot silently fall back to your home line.

Most travel plans start counting either when you install them or when they first connect abroad — check the plan's terms so you install at the right time.
