How to Transfer an eSIM to a New iPhone

Apple can move an eSIM during iPhone setup or from the Cellular settings. The exact option depends on your carrier and iPhone models, so keep the old phone available until the new line connects.

The quick answer

Start the new iPhone with both phones nearby, signed in as needed, Bluetooth enabled and connected to WiFi. During setup, follow the prompt to transfer a mobile plan. If setup is already complete, open Settings, tap Cellular, choose Add eSIM and select the transfer option when it appears.

Before you begin

  • Keep the old iPhone switched on and close to the new iPhone.
  • Update both phones when a software update is available.
  • Connect the new iPhone to WiFi or another working internet connection.
  • Do not erase the old iPhone until the new line can make a connection.

Transfer during iPhone setup

  1. Turn on the new iPhone and begin the setup process.
  2. When asked to set up Cellular, choose the option to transfer the mobile plan.
  3. Confirm the transfer on the old iPhone if it asks for approval.
  4. Wait for the new iPhone to activate the line before continuing.

Moving the plan normally deactivates it on the old iPhone. That is why the old device should stay available until the transfer finishes.

Transfer after setup

  1. On the new iPhone, open Settings and tap Cellular.
  2. Tap Add eSIM, then choose the available transfer option.
  3. Follow the on-screen confirmation steps on both iPhones.
  4. Test mobile data and calls before removing anything from the old device.

If the transfer option is missing

The carrier may not support Apple's direct transfer flow for that line. Contact the carrier for a replacement eSIM or use its published QR code and manual activation details. For a travel eSIM, check the provider's account or support instructions before deleting the original profile: some activation codes are single-use.
