What does a travel eSIM cost in 2026?

Short answer: across the destinations we can price, the typical travel eSIM works out at about $3.63 per GB — but the spread between the cheapest and most expensive countries is large. This guide explains how to read that number, what makes a plan good value, and where to check the figure for your destination.

Price per GB is the number that matters

A $5 plan is not automatically cheaper than a $12 one. Dividing the price by the data allowance puts every plan on the same scale, which is how you spot that a small “cheap” bundle is often the most expensive data you can buy. Larger bundles almost always cost less per GB, so the practical question is how much data you will realistically use, not which plan has the lowest sticker price.

Validity matters in the same way: a one-day plan that expires before your trip ends forces a second purchase, wiping out the saving. Match the validity window to your trip first, then compare per-GB rates within that window.

What counts as a good price

Across 213 destinations in our catalogue, the average destination median is $4.44 per GB. Use that as a rough benchmark: well below it in a well-served country is a good deal, while remote islands and destinations with few roaming agreements sit far above it and always will. Compare a plan against its own destination, never against the global average.

How to bring your own cost down

  • Estimate your usage before buying. Maps, messaging and the odd search rarely exceed 1–2 GB a week; video streaming changes that completely.
  • Prefer one plan that covers your whole trip over stacking short passes, which usually carry the worst per-GB rates.
  • If you visit several countries, check whether a regional plan beats separate local ones on your route.
  • Check both providers we list for your destination — the gap between the cheapest and median plan in one country is often larger than the gap between countries.

Where these figures come from

Every number on this page is calculated from active, non-demo plans in the esimdu catalogue on Oct 16, 2026. Only USD-priced metered plans feed the per-GB figures; unlimited plans have no per-GB rate and are excluded. Full methodology, limitations and the complete dataset.
